Suga Mama

A 2 track funk single (7m 38s) — released September 3rd 2012 on Breakin Bread

True heavyweights in the Hammond Funk category, The Getup are fast establishing a reputation for irresistible grooves, infectious melodies and energetic performances that have been shaking dance floors since 2004. They came to our attention due to a stunning set a few months ago at Breakin Bread's residency at The Blues Kitchen and we are proud to release their latest studio excursions.

Their first release in a series of 7"s for Breakin Bread showcase their sound perfectly. A Femme Funk Groover on the a side and Heavy Hammond Funk on the flip.

Side A - Suga Mama
After successfully pumping out raw Hammond fuelled instrumentals for the past eight years, this is The Getup's first release featuring the vocal talents of Sabina Challenger. From the opening few seconds a kick and snare powerful enough to shake any dance floor would have you believe it's all about the drums, but the intricate and vintage sounding guitar, funky bass and swelling horns and Hammond make it one of the bands best recordings to date. Add to this Sabina's fine vocal, with interesting almost Indian tinged scales in the melody, and you may have a future classic.

Side B - Straight From The Hob
"Ok, lets go into the studio and just write a fast, funky, signature tune" was the brief for this track. And sure enough, kicking in with the 100mph hi-hat and bongo groove, heavy on the Hammond and Clav, and with it's instantly recognizable guitar riff you know we're on The Getup's home turf. Recorded live in the studio straight to tape, this clearly shows the band have been playing together for enough years to be able to nail a tune like this, but still fuel it with the energy and excitement of a band that are just discovering themselves. There wasn't a single computer involved in this analogue production it's like the difference between micro-waved baked beans and those, well, straight from the hob. There's no comparison.

Background

The Getup sold out of their debut release, Getup & Groove (2007), within months and gained fans all over Europe. They released the follow-up album Life @ Cafe Eric (2008) to more critical acclaim and got a whole heap of live dates as a result. From major venues including theJazz Cafe, the legendary100 Club andSt Paul Soul Jazz Festival(France), these guys have played almost everywhere to enthusiastic audiences.

The Getup's unique sound can be attributed not only to their influences Booker T, Charles Earland, Eddie Russ and many of those rare Funk 45's from the 60s and 70s but also to the list of groups it's members have worked with, includingJames Taylor Quartet, The Brand New Heavies(Linda Muriel),Sir Joe Quarterman,Gizelle Smith, Paprika Soul, Paolo NegriandGene Drayton Unit.Add to this the band's dedication to an authentic, raw funk sound, favouring a REAL Hammond Organ, analogue recording equipment, sweltering vocals and hip horn arrangements, The Getup have found a sound that'll have you screaming for more.
